BMW B48 Low Oil Pressure and VANOS Faults: Blocked Central Valve and Failed Solenoid

The problem

This BMW came to us with the B48 2.0 litre petrol engine. It had a low oil pressure warning, and the engine light was on with camshaft timing faults.

We found three problems:

  • A blocked VANOS central valve filter
  • Camshaft adjuster misalignment
  • A failed VANOS solenoid (VANOS magnet)

What is VANOS?

VANOS is BMW’s variable camshaft timing system. It uses oil pressure to change the camshaft position while you drive. This gives better power, smoother running and better fuel economy.

To work properly, VANOS needs clean oil and good oil pressure.

What went wrong

Each camshaft has a central valve with a small mesh filter inside. In this engine, the filter was blocked with pieces of plastic debris.

When the filter is blocked, oil can’t flow properly. The camshaft adjusters can’t move to the right position, and the engine reports timing faults and low oil pressure.

We also found the VANOS solenoid had failed. The solenoid tells the central valve when to move. When it fails, the camshaft timing can’t be controlled.

Warning signs

  • Low oil pressure warning
  • Engine warning light
  • Camshaft timing fault codes
  • Rough idle or engine shaking
  • Lack of power
  • Rattle noise on cold start

Which BMWs have the B48 engine?

The B48 is found in many modern BMWs, including the 320i, 330i, 220i, 230i, 520i, 530i, X1, X3 and some MINI Cooper S models.

What we did

  • Read and checked fault codes
  • Removed the valve cover and locked the camshafts with BMW timing tools
  • Removed the VANOS central valves and found the blocked filters
  • Fitted new genuine BMW central valves
  • Replaced the failed VANOS solenoid
  • Set the camshaft timing correctly
  • Changed the engine oil and filter
  • Cleared the faults and road tested the car

The result

The oil pressure is back to normal, the timing faults are gone, and the engine runs smoothly again.

Prevention tips

  • Change your oil on time, with the correct BMW-approved oil
  • Don’t ignore a low oil pressure warning. Stop and check the car
  • Get engine light and timing faults checked early
  • If debris is found, find where it came from
