What happened
This BMW came into our workshop with a damaged drive belt. When we looked closer, the problem was much bigger than a belt.
Oil had been leaking onto the belt for a long time. The rubber went soft and started to break apart. Small strands of the belt got pulled in behind the crank pulley, past the front crank seal, and into the engine.
When we removed the oil pan, we found belt pieces wrapped around the oil pump pickup.
Why this is dangerous
The oil pickup is where the engine draws its oil. If belt pieces block it, the engine can lose oil pressure. Low oil pressure can damage bearings and lead to serious engine failure.
Many drivers don’t know anything is wrong until the belt snaps or a warning light comes on.
Which BMWs are affected?
This is a common problem on the N55 and N54 six-cylinder engines. These engines are found in many 3 Series, 4 Series, 1 Series, 2 Series and 5 Series models.
The main cause: oil leaks
The most common cause is a leaking oil filter housing gasket. It sits right above the belt. As the gasket ages, oil drips onto the belt and slowly destroys it.
